Azizi Energy’s billion-dollar investment in Afghanistan
The objective is to build 10,000 MW of power generation infrastructure and ultimately transform the country into a net exporter of energy.
Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 24 February 2025: Azizi Energy, a subsidiary of the Azizi Group, has announced a bold initiative to bring large-scale energy infrastructure to Afghanistan. The objective is to transform the country into a net exporter of energy, whilst today it imports nearly 80% of its power.
A history of conflict and occupation has left more than half of urban Afghans without electricity, whilst only 10% of their rural counterparts have access. Most of the country’s energy is imported, which has become unreliable and unaffordable. This energy shortage has an unfortunate impact on the economy and development of the country.
The country’s current electricity demand is estimated at 1,500 megawatts (MW). This is projected to grow to 3,500 MW within seven years. To meet and exceed that demand, Azizi Energy’s plan includes a 200 MW solar plant in Kabul, followed by dozens of projects with a total capacity of 10,000 MW countrywide in the next five years.
Powering Afghanistan is just the first step, the ultimate goal is to turn it into a net exporter of energy.
